BambooHR / Checkr User Guide
This guide describes how to set up Checkr to use within BambooHR, allowing BambooHR users to initiate and view Checkr background checks from within the BambooHR interface.
Prerequisites
The following items are required to initiate BambooHR / Checkr integration. Please ensure you have the following before proceeding.
- Access to BambooHR, with admin rights
- Access to Checkr, with admin rights
BambooHR Access
Full Admins in BambooHR will have access to request a background check for candidates. You can grant Custom Users access to request background checks as well. Navigate to step 2 What This Access Level Can Do and click on Hiring. Then check both Manage Job Openings, Talent Pools, and Candidates and Run Background Checks. Any users with access to manage candidates but not run background checks will still be able to view the status tile.
When the integration is turned off, BambooHR will turn off this access permission for any Custom Levels that have it enabled. Meaning, that if they re-integrate the permission needs to be granted again.

Add Checkr to BambooHR
First, enable Checkr from within BambooHR.
Enable Checkr setup for the first time
- Install the new app in BambooHR
- Must be done by a BambooHR admin who is also an admin in Checkr
- Navigate to Account Settings, select the Apps section and install the Checkr App
- You will be redirected to enter your BambooHR account subdomain*.

- Next, follow the steps and log into Checkr from the modal, then complete the installation.
- If you are already a Checkr customer, select Sign In to connect your current Checkr account to BambooHR.
- If you are not a current Checkr customer, select Sign Up to create a Checkr account, and add your billing and credentialing information.
Create a Checkr account
If your company does not yet have a Checkr account, one must be created before integrating with BambooHR.
To create an account for use with BambooHR:
- Click Sign Up when prompted.
- Enter your name and company contact information, and click Continue.
- Provide the requested credentialing information. Fill out the Contact/Business information and the Payment method forms then click Continue. This information is required by law to ensure that only legitimate companies, with legitimate business needs, can run background checks.
- Note: Select Purpose: Pre-employment to use Checkr to run background checks for hiring/employment purposes.
- Invoices for background checks will come directly from Checkr, and not from BambooHR.
- Payment information may be edited on the Checkr dashboard after the account has been created.

- Submit Account to send your information to Checkr for review. Once the credentialing process is complete, Checkr will notify both you and BambooHR. You may then begin ordering background checks through BambooHR’s platform.
Credentialing typically takes 1-2 business days. If Checkr needs additional information, they will reach out to you directly by email.
Disabling the Legacy Integration
I already use the BambooHR - Legacy Checkr integration, how do I start using the new integration?
- To disable the legacy integration in BambooHR, have the Checkr admin log in to the Checkr account.
- After logging in, navigate to the Admin tab in the left-side navigation bar and click Integrations.
- Click Application Details below BambooHR in the integrations list to continue.
- Click on the garbage can icon to delete the integration.
- Note: The admin in both BambooHR and Checkr will need to complete these steps. If this is not the same person at your company, have your Checkr admin authenticate through the BambooHR admin's account.
Installing the new integration
If you are already using Checkr in BambooHR and need to update the integration, navigate to Settings Apps. Click Install next to the Checkr app to begin. A modal will appear for you to connect your Checkr account and install the integration in BambooHR. Note: You will need to log in to Checkr via the hyperlink in the modal before you can initiate the installation. Once you log into Checkr via the hyperlink the install button will be clickable. After installing the new app, Checkr will need to approve your account, which can take up to 24 hours. You will get an email notification of the approval from Checkr.
Cleaning up your account
In the legacy version of the BambooHR Checkr integration, we had you create custom statuses within settings that can now be deleted. Navigate to Settings Hiring and click on Candidate Statuses. Delete the following statuses:
- Background Check Initiate
- Background Check in Progress Checkr
- Background Check Complete - Consider
- Background Check Complete - Clear
You are now ready to use the new integration.
Order Background Checks
To initiate a background check through Checkr, click the gear icon on the candidate record in BambooHR. Then click Run Background Check. This action will send the candidate information to your Checkr account to begin a new background check. If the candidate already exists in your Checkr account, the status will automatically change to Background Check In Progress.
A modal will appear for you to enter the following information:
- Candidate email address
- Country
- State
- Background Check Package
- Click Send Background Check to finish
- Once the background check has been submitted, a tile will display the status of the background check on the candidate profile. An authenticated Checkr user can hover over the tile and click the three dots to view the report in Checkr or cancel the request.
- When a request is canceled or Checkr expires, you will have the option to run another background check. After a report has been canceled or expired for more than 72 hours, the tile will disappear and a new request for a background check can be made from the gear icon.
- The status tile will still be visible to Hiring Leads and Collaborators that do not have access to request a background check, however, they will not be able to perform this functionality. See the Access section for more information.
- You can track the history of the background check under the History subtab within the Notes tab on the candidate profile. BambooHR will track when the request is sent and by who, if the request is canceled, and when the request is complete. Click on the link to open the report in the Checkr dashboard, and review details. - Most background checks will be completed within 24 hours, but the time to complete can range from a few minutes to a few weeks, depending on the type of check ordered, the geographic location of the candidate, and/or county courthouse operations.
